Here is my latest commission in progress at the moment.........

A Commission in progress..

first stage
stage 2
First I draw an outline very lightly in pencil. It doesn't really show on this background which is art spectrum - like a very fine sandpaper in a sand colour. I then start with the face, and then the other skin areas so that I get the tones right.

Next I add in the clothes. These can sometimes make the skin too pale or the features washed out so I adjust these once the clothes are completed.
stage 3

I also add white pastel where the dog is about to go.....

stage 4
Then develop the dog.
stage 5
Followed by the backround which is part pencil and part pastel stick.
final stage - the completed painting

The completed painting - which used 34 different shades of pastel pencil (Pitt pastel, Conte and Bruynzeel) and 6 Sennelier pastel sticks.

Although I did this entirely from a photograph, I feel as if I have got to know this lovely and intelligent gentleman with his faithful dog and wispy hair . I hope he likes his portrait and it is true to the memory of his well loved but sadly departed dog.
